About this Item
Quarto; hardcover, full cloth with gilt spine and upper board titles and decorations and illustrated endpapers; 460pp., with a monochrome frontispiece and many illustrations likewise. Minor wear; spine heel lightly softened; some light spotting and marks to the text block edges; text block and page edges very lightly toned. Dustwrapper is lightly rubbed and edgeworn; now professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. Very good. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. This is one of Gertrude Jekyll's last books and she saw it as the discussion of garden ornament in relation to architecture. With her characteristic forthrightness and long experience, she made good use of the excellent collection of photographs available from "Country Life" magazine to show what should or what should not be done. It was no part of her intention to encourage the use of garden ornaments but rather to show how they could and should not be used to achieve the best effect. Once again, one can only admire Gertrude Jekyll's unusual and creative flair, her considered and eminently sensible opinions, her practical guidance; and be surprised anew that her messages are as fresh, imaginative and valuable as when she first wrote "Garden Ornament" over 100 years ago.
