State College, Pennsylvania: State College Free Press [Underground Press and Liberation News Service]: January 27, 1969. Folio (15 x 10 inches). [12]pp. Newspaper. One ownership stamp in red ink for U.S. Naval Reserve Cmdr. Nelson F. Wood, with a few notations and underlined words in matching ink; very good, overall. The first issue of this underground counterculture newspaper at University Park, Pennsylvania, named after a military research facility at Penn State honoring a journalism graduate killed in WWII. Launched on January 27, 1969, it initially featured provocative content, such as a front-page nude photo of John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Shortly after release, Penn State s Vice President for Student Affairs banned its campus distribution, pushing sales off-campus at locations like Nittany News. Like many underground newspapers of its time, it faced censorship, including obscenity charges in April 1969. This issue, marked with Commander U.S.N.R. (Ret.) Nelson F. Wood s red ink ownership stamp and matching annotations, suggests his possible involvement in the obscenity charges brought against the paper, a frequent tactic against underground publications. Wood underlined provocative phrases, including "Swinging dorm rat" and "burn baby burn," and stapled a yellow paper over a nude image of John Lennon and Yoko Ono on the cover. Quite scarce.
