From the author's preface: ''In this book I seek to carry out a review and judgment of the simple theories of chemical kinetics that were developed and used during the last forty years. The field of chemical kinetics as practiced in recent years has been a highly partisan affair. About 1933, collision theory seemed to consist merely of the hard-sphere collision-rate expression and a vague, empirical 'steric factor.' The zealousness of the activated-complex school alienated many serious chemists, and generated an opposing 'party'. Today many molecular-beam kineticists regard 'the activated complex' with the same disdain as was turned upon the 'steric factor' thirty years ago. I would like to believe that I sit on the fence between activated-complex theory and collision theory, and that I point out good features of each method.''
