Sindarin was one of the last languages author and linguist Tolkien developed, and like the others it was not intended to be ideal in any way, but to be plausibly realistic as a pretended natural language. Though only part of his work on his languages has been published, Salo believes enough is known to begin the grammatic analysis of Sindarin. He describes the history of the language within its fantasy world, sounds, writings systems, historical phonology, mutations, the various parts of speech, compounds, loanwords, and syntax. An English-Sindarin glossary is included, but no index. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
