Reviews
An Illinois wildlife biologist and part-time photographer, Rice here recounts 12 of his trips into the Alaskan wilderness. His tours include national parks, white water rivers, and wildlife refuges, as well as other isolated areas. Many of his adventures keep the reader glued to the page. Among the high points are the nuggets of history that Rice throws in and several startling moments, such as the sighting of a pack of wolves. The book starts off strong, but Rice's flabby prose becomes tiresome, and this squelches the sense of majesty and excitement he is trying to convey. On the whole, a disappointing work.
