I suoi racconti offrono uno sguardo d'insieme e dall'interno sulla vita sociale e culturale della Livonia verso la fine del xix secolo, quando era insieme provincia europea, per quanto poco conosciuta, e anche marca estrema dell'impero dello zar, amministrata dai baroni baltotedeschi e con la popolazione lettone sottoposta alla "servit� della gleba". Sono per� anche gli anni in cui si consolidano le aspirazioni del movimento nazionale e prende fisionomia l'idea di uno Stato lettone.

� questa la temperie politica e culturale in cui Blaumanis si forma e alla quale offre la sua voce, focalizzando i fatti, le vicende e la psicologia della gente comune, di cui tratteggia i piccoli e grandi drammi della vita quotidiana con un tratto sempre misurato e trasparente. Come egli stesso ebbe a scrivere: �La cosa pi� importante non � ci� che descrivi, se una rosa o un mucchio di letame, bens� come lo fai!�.

Celeberrime in patria, e conosciute anche all’estero grazie alle traduzioni in tedesco curate dallo stesso autore, le novelle di Blaumanis hanno conosciuto numerose e fortunate trasposizioni teatrali e cinematograche, e
la loro fama � ormai destinata ad assumere una statura europea.

Si ripropone qui una nuova edizione – rivista e annotata – della raccolta di racconti gi� pubblicata nel lontano 1945 per la traduzione di Marta Rasupe, alcuni dei quali sono stati anche trasposti con successo sul grande schermo.
