About this title

Synopsis

The internet is decentralised, heterogeneous and fragile. From the very beginning, it was regarded as a space where social utopias could be realised. These include deconstructivist ideas such as the dissolution of gender boundaries once believed to be rigid. Online, the categories of gender and race - which perpetuate inequality - could be de-essentialised and decoupled from the body and sexuality, according to the enthusiastic predictions of early feminist and critical theorists. With the commercialisation of the web, however, these hopes have increasingly been dashed; subversive online content is being co-opted, and marginalised people are also facing discrimination online. Yet the tendencies to undermine the hegemonic order cannot be entirely eradicated. This book traces the feminist and race-critical discourses on the subject of the internet. From cyborgs and gender swapping in text-based chats to the racialisation of digital labour, the book provides a broad overview of the research. The theoretical framework is formed by (de-)constructivist approaches to the interplay between power and gender, as well as between the body and 'race', which are explained in detail.
