The General Biographical Dictionary. Revised by A. Chalmers

The General Biographical Dictionary. Revised By A. ChalmersThis is a lexicon-style survey of European figures whose names begin with P, offering concise life sketches that record birth and death dates, main roles, career highlights, notable works, and occasional anecdotes. Covering antiquity through the 18th century, the entries span theology, antiquarianism and philology, medicine and science, literature and philosophy, arts and architecture, and travel. The collection foregrounds editors, patrons, librarians, translators, and scholars who shaped intellectual history through the transmission of texts, libraries, inscriptions, coinage, and manuscript culture. It emphasizes cross-cultural exchange among France, Italy, England, the Low Countries, and beyond, and notes patrons, academies, and networks that linked scholars across Europe. Structured as brief biographical capsules with bibliographic references, it serves as a metadata-rich reference work for cataloging persons, their works, and their influence across disciplines from late antiquity to the 18th century.
