The General Biographical Dictionary. Revised by A. Chalmers

The General Biographical Dictionary. Revised By A. Chalmers is a dense, alphabetically organized biographical reference that compiles concise life sketches of European scholars, churchmen, and literary figures whose names run from NIC- to related roots. The excerpt emphasizes birth and death dates, education, career, major works, offices, patronage, and the historical significance of contributions; it highlights bibliographic activity, manuscript culture, editors who preserved classical texts, and cross-border intellectual networks across Italy, France, England, the Low Countries, and beyond. The work covers a wide range of disciplines — theology, philosophy, philology, history, law, mathematics, geography, natural science, music, and theater — and spans antiquity to the 18th century. It serves as a metadata-classification resource rather than narrative, focusing on patrons, libraries, controversies, publishing practices, and the editors and translators who shaped early modern knowledge. Representative entries include Nicolas V, Napier, Ovid, Ortelius, Oldys, and Orme, among many others.
