The General History Volume 1

The General History by Polybius is a sweeping account of the rise of Rome and its emergence as a world power. Translated here by James Hampton, the work surveys the series of events that transformed a city-state in central Italy into the dominant power of the Mediterranean. It covers Rome's wars against Carthage, especially the Punic conflicts that stretched from Sicily and Iberia to the Italian peninsula, and the rise and fall of Hellenistic monarchies that shaped Greece and Asia. Central to Polybius's method is an insistence on explaining causes, motives, and political design rather than merely recounting battles. He seeks to connect disparate theaters—Italy, Spain, Africa, Greece, and Illyria—into a single historical narrative that illuminates how Rome built an empire through policy, alliance, and disciplined military practice. The text includes prefaces and dedications that address translation, fidelity to the ancient text, and the historian's broader aims: to teach prudent statecraft and the lessons of past Fortune.
