The linearized small displacements buckling theorem as well as the large displacement approach important for the analysis of post-buckling behavior is developed. Thermal strains, or any kind of initial strains and stresses are included. This study is based on an elementary idealization scheme with simple geometries so that fine points related to the instability concept will not be overshadowed by unnecessary complexities.
