General Introduction to Northeastern Literature in Exile (Paperback or Softback)

The book offers a profound exploration of a pivotal movement in modern Chinese literature. This seminal academic work by Bai Changqing delves into the writings of authors displaced during the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, whose collective trauma and nostalgic longing forged a unique literary identity.

The book masterfully analyzes both the shared themes that bind these writers together—loss, resistance, and memory of their homeland—and the distinct literary voices that set them apart. Through dedicated sections, it provides in-depth critical studies of towering figures like Xiao Hong, Xiao Jun, and Duanmu Hongliang, among others, uncovering the profound depths of their individual works.

Rigorously researched and translated, this volume is an indispensable resource. It stands as a key text for scholars and students of Chinese literary history, World War II-era literature, and the powerful interplay between politics, displacement, and artistic creation. Discover the enduring legacy of these writers who, from exile, penned some of the most compelling narratives of 20th-century China.
