This is a common enough title, from the Great Commanders series, with one notable feature: it bears the signature of General O.O. Howard, Burlington, Vermont on the FFEP. Oliver Otis Howard was a career US Army officer who served as a Union General during the Civil War. He earned the Medal of Honor for his valor at the Battle of Fair Oaks/Seven Pines, in which he lost an arm. He recovered, resumed command, and was part of additional notable campaigns, including Sherman's March to the Sea. He went on to found Howard University, emphasizing his commitment to freedmen after the war. Intriguing copy, from Howard's personal library, suggesting he read this study of one of his old counterparts after the war. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall.
