Volume 2 (complete for the year 1755) only of this unusual publication. Original full leather, worn, with stains at bottom corners through much of the volume, one leaf torn, front board nearly detached. 2 folding maps, 6 single-page plates. While it has the appearance of a periodical of the time, like London or Gentleman's Magazine, this work did not have monthly issues . Millburn, Martin's Magazine: "Despite its title and publication in monthly numbers, the General Magazine was not a straightforward periodical in the usual sense: each number had a complex multi-part structure ." (See http://library.oxfordjournals.org/content/s5-XXVIII/3/221.extract). The two maps are of American interest: A Map of New England and Ye Country Adjacent . AND A Map of the British and French Settlements in North America . Jolly 70, 68 & 69. The plates are also interesting, including several which replicate views through microscopes. The larger map, drawn by Thomas Bowen, extends well past the Mississippi River and shows the locations of native tribes and indicates the claims of Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia to the Mississippi. This map shows the area from Quebec to Delaware Bay and west to Lake Ontario. It depicts towns, forts, rivers, portages, and the routes of the British marches during the French and Indian War. The New England map illustrates the British campaigns against the French forts at Niagara and Crown Point. The map includes three noteworthy inset maps: Fort Frederick at Crown Point (built by the French in 1731), Fort du Quesne (apparently drawn from information derived from French Deserters). "Oswego and English Fort" The illustration of Fort Du Quesne (Pittsburgh), makes this one of the earliest printed maps to show the fort in any detail. Seller Inventory # b00107
