Large octavo; hardcover; 404 pp. Tight binding, hinges have been reinforced; front joint partially cracked; all edges moderately to heavily worn, all corners bumped; 40 plates present; plate 33 present but misbound on a different page; plate 40 torn; previous owner bookplate and Seattle Medical Library markings to endpapers; Good. This is the sixth edition and has been translated into English from the original German. Lorenz (Laurence) Heister (1683-1758) was a German anatomist, surgeon, and botanist. He spent his early years as a field surgeon in various conflicts before becoming a professor of anatomy and surgery at the University of Helmstedt. He coined the word "tracheotomy" and the plant genus "Heisteria" is named after him. . KCMS.
