A General View of the Rise, Progress, and Brilliant Achievements of the American Navy, Down to the Present Time

A General View Of The Rise, Progress, And Brilliant Achievements Of The American Navy, Down To The Present Timepresents a compendium-style history that links American maritime power to national independence. The excerpt surveys the War of 1812 campaigns on the Canadian frontier - Niagara, Fort Niagara, Fort George, York - and corresponding U.S. naval operations on the Atlantic and Great Lakes, highlighting bold leadership, improvisation, and costly sacrifices. It traces land campaigns under commanders such as Van Rensellaer, Smyth, Harrison, Dearborn, Lewis, Pike, Chandler, and Winder, with sieges, retreats, and notable actions at Niagara, Frenchtown, and York. Naval chapters celebrate the Constitution’s victory over Cyane and Levant, the Hornet and Peacock actions, the Wasp campaigns, and the Enterprise–Boxer clash, underscoring how daring seamanship repeatedly outmatched superior forces. The narrative emphasizes primary-source reports, martial virtue, and civilian suffering, while surveying the broader arc of American naval prestige. A parallel Greek-revolution digression and appendices on commerce and diplomacy frame naval history within a global struggle for liberty and nation-building.
