About this Item
Illustrated with twelve woodcuts by Paul Nash. One of 375 numbered copies. 4to., [56pp.] Original publisher's black boards lettered at top in gilt and tail with pattern of crosses and stars, original orange dustjacket lettered likewise in black. Foredge untrimmed, pages printed on one side only and top edge unopened, so that the text runs from recto of one leaf to verso of another. London, The Nonesuch Press. A fantastic copy in fine condition, the orange dustwrapper entirely unrestored, slight fading to spine and small chips to top and bottom edges, short tear to top flap of upper cover, light spots of soiling, boards bright and unsoiled, internally fine. Given the inherently fugitive nature of the fragile orange jacket, and the brittle paper used to cover the boards, this is the finest copy we have ever seen. The first book on which Nash worked with the Curwen Press, and the first extended use in England of Rudolf Koch's Neuland type. It contains some of Nash's finest work, and is a superbly homogenous piece of printing: the heavy and angular typeface is the perfect partner to Nash's ?primeval? illustrations. Clare Colvin Paul Nash Book Designs (1982) said of Genesis that it ?raises the art of woodcutting to a new artistic level?, and the Descriptive Catalogue in A History of the Nonesuch Press (1981) describes it and Urne Buriall as ?two of the most remarkable books of the 20s and 30s?.
