The introduction of science based technology during the last 25 years has helped many developing counties in achieving a favourable relationship between population growth and food production. However in the coming century our society will face challenges of both increasing food production and improving its quality. Although agricultural productivity and consequently food availability in general are expected to increased through the direct use of bio technology and genetic improvement in conjunction with the conventional methods of plant improvement Genetically Modified (GM) crops may offer a potential avenue for meeting global food needs through increasing production levels and nutritional content of staple crops and reducing post harvest losses. Recently rapid advances in the development and commercialization of transgenic crops across the world have been witnessed both in terms increased crop coverage and economic benefits.
