The Geographical Dictionary of Ancient and Mediaeval India

Language: English. About The Book Ancient geography is an essential adjustment of history, and the usefulness of a compendium of such geographical information for a full and just appreciation of the latter hardly needs any mention specially when time has mutilated or obscured the ancient names of places that usually figure in the historical narratives. Indian history, ancient or medieval, and the documents upon which it is principally based, are full of these names, and unless they are elucidated in a systematic way as far as possible, the path of the historian and, for the matter of that, of the ordinary readers of history, will continue uneasy for this difficulty alone. About The Author : :-Nundolal Dey of the Bengal Judicial service, member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal and Author of the Geographical dictionary of ancient and medival India. The present work was originally published by me under the pseudonym of Una in a series of articles in the Bengal Magazine of 1877 and 1878. The favourable notice that was taken of them at the time by the leading journals of India has encouraged me to collect and present them to the public in a handy form. The author has attempted briefly in this work to deal with some of the subjects in which the ancient Hindus attained a high digree of excellence and to trace some of the causes of their decline.
