Hodder and Stoughton, London, no date [1868]; 235 x 275mm; pictorial boards; pp [viii], [iii, being publisher's advertisements for books for young people; 11 (of 12, France being absent) coloured maps, anthropomorphised to take the form of fantastical human, each map with a four-line verse at the foot; conditiion is poor to fair, this partly on account of the missing map of France but more particularly on account of the damage, including printed loss, to the pictorial covers and that the contents are disbound and in consequence each have three small holes in the left hand margins, although well clear of the area of the relevant maps, and there's some general dust marking of the margins; the maps are identified following, with any specific additional faults described. The individual maps are, however, in decent condition. . . . . . England - small crease in the LH margin area; Scotland; Wales; Ireland - 8cm crease at the foot of the left margin; Spain & Portugal; Italy; Prussia; Germany; Holland and Belgium; Denmark - dust stain along the outer edge of the left margin; Russia . . . . . The maps were drawn by 14 year-old Eliza Jane Lancaster to amuse her ill brother and later collected together and duly published by the London doctor and occasional journalist William Harvey.
