About this Item

A wonderfully detailed hand-colored engraving from Henry Charles Carey and Issac Lea, which also includes accompanying text. Overall this print measures 22.5"x18". Published in 1827 by Carey and Lea in Philadelphia, this map was a part of Historical, Chronological, and Geographical American Atlas. Carey's father in law, Matthew Carey, was a renowned cartographer and is recognized for creating the first American atlas. Matthew Carey used low cost production methods and an out-worker basis for his business, which encouraged a cartographic cottage industry for engravers, colorists and cartographers. This map's text adds new annotations on the soil, water and other geological and historical information. Overall this map is in good condition with some foxing/staining/creasing in margins.
