Geography, Urbanisation and Settlement Patterns in the Roman Near East (Variorum Collected Studies Series)

The 15 reproduced articles reflect MacAdam's research and publication since the early 1980s. They consider cartography and cultural identity in terms of the Mediterranean, the Orient, and Africa in early maps; Strabo, Pliny, Ptolemy and the Tabula Peutingeriana; some Hellenistic toponyms of Phoenicia; and other perspectives. To explore cities, villages, and rural settlements, he offers studies on such topics as Philadelphia (now Ammon, Jordan) in the classical period, settlements and settlement patterns in northern and central Transjordania between about 550 and 750, and fragments of a Latin building inscription from Jordan's Aqaba.
