From Volume V of the War Department's Report of Explorations in California for Railroad Routes, 1856, led by Lieut. R.S. Williamson, prepared to accompany the report of William P. Blake, geologist to the expedition. Hand colored lithograph by Sarony, Major, and Knapp, New York. A landmark early geologic map of California. Lake Tahoe is labeled Lake Bonpland, the name given it by Charles Preuss on his 1848 map. Fremont and Preuss were the first Europeans to see Lake Tahoe. Amie Jacques Alexandre Bonpland was a celebrated French botanist. Some near contemporary maps of the area called Lake Tahoe Mountain Lake - the name preferred by Fremont. On this map Lake Bonpland is shown draining into the American River system to the west and a mystery Truckey Lake , northwest of Bonpland, flows into Pyramid Lake via the Truckey River. There was a lake named Truckey in the 1850 s, but it was part of the Yuba River system. Apparently Fremont, Preuss, Williamson and Blake were more familiar with the Carson and Walker river systems since they are more accurately drawn. In Fine condition.
