Excerpt from A Geological Reconnaissance of the Region Traversed by the National Transcontinental Railway Between Lake Nipigon and Clay Lake, Ontario
Geological information has been obtained during the prosecution of these surveys at various times and by different observers. In practically all cases geological and topographical operations were conducted together, consequently the former was hastily performed and must be regarded as reconnaissance work. The earliest work referred to is that of Dr. Robert Bell in 1869 and 1871. Geological notes were also made relative to the route he traversed in 1872. Visits within the limits of the map sheets were made by D. B. Dowling in 1895 and A; P. Coleman2 two years later. Owing, how ever, to the lack of pre-existing maps, points of observation could not be accurately located, hence their accounts have lost much in value.
