Geological Text-Book, for Aiding the Study of North American Geology: Being a Systematic Arrangement of Facts Collected by the Author and His Pupils

Geological Text-Book, For Aiding The Study Of North American Geology: Being A Systematic Arrangement Of Facts Collected By The Author And His Pupils by Amos Eaton is a pioneering 19th-century American geology manual that presents a systematic arrangement of geological facts for studying North American geology. It outlines the author’s instructional philosophy, the progression of geological thought, and a practical program for classroom and field work. The text encompasses five major rock series from primitive to tertiary, with detailed discussions of rock formations, fossil remains, and the use of organized remains to determine rock strata. It includes extensive sections on the organization of fossils (such as trilobites, crinoids, and corals), the classification of rocks, and a “Geological Synopsis” that integrates science with education, mining, soils, and agriculture. The work emphasizes field excursions, specimen-based teaching, and regional tours (notably along the Hudson River) to illustrate stratigraphy. Rich with plates, locality notes, and methodological guidance, the book reflects early American geology pedagogy and a practical framework for mapping North American geology.
