George Washington Webb , a common man who fought for the rights of the common soldier, the pension problems of the Indian war veterans and widows. He organized the veterans into a national association, began publishing Winners of the West, a newspaper dedicated to those who fought, and he continually lobbied for the granting of pensions and increasing those pensions granted.

These stories of the regular soldier sometimes do not have perfect grammar or spelling. The editor has left them alone, giving us a truer picture of the men who wrote them. Originally from Casper, Wyoming, Mary Ann Thompson moves to Hays, Kansas in 1985. She has a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Wyoming, a master's in history from the University of Kansas, and a master's degree in library science from the University of Denver.

Since 1985, Mary Ann has been the Kansas Room Librarian at the Hays Public Library. The Dorothy D. Richards Kansas Room is a special collection devoted to Kansas and the American West, including an extensive Custer collection.

Over the years, Mary Ann has been active in many organizations, serving on the boards of the Humane Society of the High Plains, the Hays Arts Council, the Mountain Plains Library Association, the University of Wyoming Alumni Band Association, and she is presently serving on the board of the Kansas State Historical Society. She was active in adding documents to the Kansas Collection website and has been on local committees for the Chautauqua of the Great Plains, the Home on the Range Conference and the Eisenhower Centennial committee.

Mary Ann Thompson returns to Wyoming whenever she can, including camping in the Big Horn Mountains with her basset hound, Brutus.
