While George W. Bush has been out of office for only a few years, an early historical assessment is much needed. This is very difficult for a historian, and especially when one's subject is George W. Bush. He had no long legislative or political career against which to measure his presidency. There are virtually no public records available for the first two-thirds of his life. He is too recently out of office to have a presidential library, or records from his administration declassified. Even his papers as governor remain officially closed and await transfer to the campus of Southern Methodist University where his presidential papers will be prepared for eventual release. Despite these shortcomings in methodology, this book is an attempt at such a historical assessment. One of the very first book-length historical treatments of George W. Bush, this biography covers his life from athletic youth to owner of the Texas Rangers, through Governor of Texas to President of the United States.

About the Author

Luke A. Nichter specializes in 20th century U.S. political history. He earned his Ph.D. from Bowling Green State University in 2008 and joined the faculty of Texas A&M Central Texas that same year. Dr. Nichter recently completed a book-length biography of George W. Bush, and is now revising a multi-lingual, multi-archival book manuscript, Richard Nixon and Europe: Confrontation and Cooperation, 1969-1975. He is also under contract to write book-length biographies of Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon. Dr. Nichter runs the scholarly website nixontapes.org, where he makes the most complete digitized collection of Nixon tapes available to researchers as a public service. He is a former Executive Producer of C-SPAN's American History TV and his work has been periodically featured by The New York Times, The Washington Post, and the Associated Press.
