Gilt titles spine. 19 x 13cm. 218 pages 10 further pages of listings of other authors and books in the Eminent Women Series. Up to this point in time details of George Eliot's life were scanty. Here, the author has obtained biographical information through private sources. She met with Eliot's brother, Isaac Evans, + neighbours who lived in the area + contemporaries of her father Robert Evans. Also Eliot's oldest friends. Condition: Cloth boards are age and handling worn & discoloured in patches. Top and bottom of spine + corner wear. Boards showing on corner tips. Gilt titles & design however are still vibrant. Yellow end papers have speckled age discolouring. and both front and back are cracked down seam. Free opening paper is loose. Half title page slightly age discoloured. Many paragraphs and lines are lightly underlined in pencil, or highlighted in margin with light pencil line. Otherwise clean, little wear, main text bound firm, good colour. For age and obvious use in remarkable condition.
