Learn Spencerian penmanship as a complete system―not simply a collection of cursive worksheets―with the Theory Book plus all five progressive Copybooks.
Developed by Platt Rogers Spencer, Spencerian penmanship became one of the defining handwriting styles of nineteenth-century America. Its flowing letterforms were designed to be both graceful and efficient, built from a limited number of fundamental strokes practiced rhythmically until writing became smooth and consistent.
This six-book set gives students both parts of the method: the explanation behind the system and the progressive practice needed to develop it. The Theory Book explains how letters are constructed from basic principles, how movement and rhythm affect writing, and how Spencer intended the method to be taught. The five Copybooks then guide students from basic lowercase forms to capitals, words, numerals, and complete sentences.
Because the books are systematic rather than age-locked, the set can be used in several ways: to introduce cursive to elementary students, to refine the handwriting of older students, to help adults develop a more attractive hand, or to study Spencerian script as a traditional form of penmanship and calligraphic art. The complete six-book set includes:
Why use the full Spencerian set?
The Theory Book contains 48 pages, and each of the five Copybooks contains 24 pages.
For the fullest Spencerian experience, this six-book set combines instruction and practice into one coherent course―moving from the fundamental stroke to a confident, flowing hand.

The complete six-book set includes:
- Spencerian Theory Book: explains the fundamental strokes used to build letters, the philosophy behind the method, and practical approaches for teaching penmanship―including rhythmic class practice.
- Copybook 1: introduces the short lowercase letters through four basic principles or strokes.
- Copybook 2: adds selected tall letters, including t and d, and introduces numerals 1–9.
- Copybook 3: completes the lowercase alphabet and introduces most capital letters.
- Copybook 4: completes the capital alphabet and gives practice writing letters within words.
- Copybook 5: uses sentences and sayings to develop connected writing, consistency, spacing, and fluency.
Why use the full Spencerian set?
- Understand the “why” behind the forms: the Theory Book explains the method instead of asking students merely to imitate letters.
- Progress in small steps: each Copybook adds new forms after earlier movements have been practiced.
- Develop rhythm and control: repeated movement trains the hand for smoother, more consistent writing.
- Improve legibility and appearance: useful for students whose handwriting is readable but awkward as well as those learning cursive for the first time.
- Study a classic American handwriting tradition: ideal for classical homeschool programs, history-minded families, or anyone interested in elegant script.
- Write comfortably: the copybooks are specially bound to lie flat so students can use the full practice page without fighting the binding.
