About the Author

George Washington (1732–1799) was a Founding Father, military commander, and the first President of the United States. Born in Virginia, he rose to prominence as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, leading American forces to victory in the Revolutionary War. He was unanimously elected president in 1789, serving two terms and establishing many precedents for the fledgling government, including the peaceful transfer of power.
