Robbin D. Knapp is an American who was born in Denver, Colorado, and has been living in the German-speaking country of Austria since 1984 with his Austrian wife. Therefore, he speaks German fluently. He studied Latin, German, and French in high school and at the University of Virginia (Bachelor of Arts in Biology), where he financed his education by working in the university library and hospital. Since 1985, he has been translating a wide variety of texts between German and English. While in the Peace Corps in Tanzania, he learned Swahili and spoke it fluently. He has held a wide variety of jobs, including cab driver, assistant English teacher, computer programmer, and most recently IT manager. He has been an enthusiastic amateur linguist since high school.
Besides managing his own linguistics Web site (HumanLanguages.com), he has also translated many other Web sites from German to English and vice versa, for example the Bird Names Translation Index, the City of Linz Web cam project, and the Biology Center of the Upper Austrian Provincial Museum.
