A fifth column (or internal enemy) is a group of people who undermine a larger group or nation from within, usually in favor of an enemy group or another nation. The activities of a fifth column can be overt or clandestine. Forces gathered in secret can mobilize openly to assist an external attack. The term is also applied to organized actions by military personnel. Clandestine fifth column activities can involve acts of sabotage, disinformation, espionage or terrorism executed within defense lines by secret sympathizers with an external force."In 1949 the International Council of Philosophic and Humanistic Studies, a body affiliated to Unesco, requested the State Institute for War Documentation at Amsterdam to contribute to a history of national socialist Germany and fascist Italy, to be written by historians from various countries. At a later stage it struck me that, especially as regards the war years, the contrast between the activities ascribed to the German Fifth Column and its actual work constituted a problem in itself of general importance."Ex military library stock so expect to see light wear and possible markings and annotations in the text.
