About this title

Synopsis

Children's books, written for pure pleasure for the little ones, only existed in Europe from the 18th century. But the roots of children's literature date back thousands of years and they span continents. In the beginning were lullabies, nursery rhymes, fables and myths that were handed down orally. This picture book clearly depicts how adults around the world have entertained, banned, taught and sometimes scared children with stories. The oldest are the Aesop fables, Thousand and One Nights and the Indian Panchatantra, more recently are the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and adventures like Gulliver's travels. But not only classics and bestsellers are presented here, but also inventiveness: the first feeling book, for example, was published in 1940. Roderick Cave has gathered amazing facts about the creation and development of the children's book. With gorgeous illustrations and lots of original envelopes. A wonderful browser for children's book fans!
