Physical therapist Browne shares the results of years of "informal interviews, rap sessions, and confidence sharing" to provide "stimulus for dialog between black men and women so the healing for them will continue." Pop psychology, quotes from the Art of War and the Tao Te Ching, references to famous blacks, self-surveys, and lists such as "four keys to self-empowerment" are all thrown in to aid black women find self-awareness in a sometimes alien white culture. Browne speaks in colloquialisms and superficial answers as she advises readers to let go of their pain and acknowledge that "love heals." And her "five easy steps" or "four keys" or "eight foolproof ways" all fall short of offering real practical steps. Except for Chapter 5's discussion of black men and occasional "us vs. them" statements, much of the book doesn't resound as specifically black and will apply and appeal to white women as well.
