Synopsis

No one who uses alcohol and other drugs (AOD) believes that they are good for them. The deleterious effects of AOD are well known, even to the users. In fact, the users know the effects of AOD better than the non-users because they must daily live with the effects of AOD abuse. This is a good example of making a bad choice, usually a lot of bad choices, in order to fulfill the Needs. We are compelled to fulfill our Needs because if we don’t then we suffer. Suffering is the consequence of not getting our Needs met. Misery is what lets us know that we’re not meeting one or more of our Psychological Needs. When we don’t meet our Survival Need then we may shiver, which is our body’s way of telling us that we need warmth. Our stomach may growl, or our throat may itch to let us know we need food or water. These are some of the ways our bodies tell us that our Need for Survival isn’t being met as well as it should be. Mental, some may say spiritual, anguish is the way our brains, or minds, tells us that our Psychological Needs are not being met as well as they should be. When we suffer, we are motivated to do something to relieve the suffering. In this way, the Basic Needs are the motivators for all human behavior.
