An early printing, 1883, of the 1873 novel jointly written by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner. This is the story of the Hawkins family, poor people who continuously attempt to sell the family's 75,000 acre parcel of land as a means to acquiring wealth. With black & white engraved illustrations throughout by Hoppin, Stephens, Williams, "White" and others. Does not include fold out map of the Salt Lick Branch of the Pacific Railroad (as in earlier printings). "The Gilded Age" lent its title to a widely-used label describing the rapid increase in wealth and greed in the US during the latter part of the 19th century. It is the only novel written by Twain and a co-author. --- Charles Dudley Warner, a Connecticut newspaper editor, was a good friend of Mark Twain and was known for his witty aphorisms, such as "Everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." --- In brown cloth-covered boards with cover & spine decorations and titling in gilt and in blind. --- An about Very Good- copy: intact and remaining sturdy and sound, but with water ring to front cover, mildly sunned spine and slightly shaken binding.; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; xvi, 17-574, [2] pages.
