"Gilles De Rais: The Original Bluebeard" offers a compelling historical account of one of the most enigmatic and terrifying figures in French history. Gilles de Rais, a 15th-century nobleman and a Marshal of France, is perhaps best remembered for his service alongside Joan of Arc during the Hundred Years' War. However, his historical legacy is inextricably linked to the dark descent that led to his eventual execution for a series of horrific crimes. This work explores the life of a man whose vast wealth and military prestige were eventually overshadowed by his involvement in alchemy, the occult, and a spree of brutal murders that shocked the medieval world.

The authors delve into the historical records to trace de Rais's transformation from a national hero to the inspiration for the chilling folk tale of Bluebeard. By examining the social and political landscape of 15th-century France, the book provides a detailed look at the trial and the testimonies that sealed his fate. This narrative serves as both a biography and a psychological study of power, madness, and the cultural impact of a figure whose name remains synonymous with infamy centuries later. It is an essential read for those interested in medieval history, true crime, and the origins of legendary folklore.
