Isaac Bashevis Singer's first collection of stories, Gimpel the Fool, is a landmark work that has attracted international acclaim since it was first published in 1957.

The title story follows the exploits of Gimpel, an ingenuous baker who is universally deceived but who declines to retaliate against his tormentors. Gimpel and the protagonists of the other stories in this volume all inhabit the distinctive pre–World War II ghettos of Poland and, beyond that, the larger world created by Singer's unforgettable prose.

Isaac Bashevis Singer naci� en Radzymin, Polonia, en 1904. Fue hijo y nieto de rabinos y vivi� en el barrio jud�o de Varsovia hasta 1935, cuando emigr� a Estados Unidos. El tema m�s socorrido en sus novelas y cuentos es la vida rural de las comunidades jud�as en Polonia antes de que estallara la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Recibi� el National Book Award en 1974 y el Premio Nobel en 1978. Muri� en Florida, Estados Unidos, en 1991.
