L’ambiente in cui si svolge la vicenda � quello del ciclismo non professionista, delle societ� ciclistiche dilettantesche, accomunate dal grande miraggio rappresentato dal Giro d’Italia. La migliore chance per diventare ricchi e famosi, in un’Italia – quella del primo dopoguerra – che recava ancora ben visibili i segni della distruzione del conflitto. Occupano il proscenio da una parte Dante Pessina, di professione benzinaio, campioncino dai discreti mezzi, e dall’altra il suo gregario, Sergio Consonni. Nel corso di una gara, il campione ha un appannamento fisico, di cui il gregario crede di poter approfittare per il proprio tornaconto. Ma proprio allora, questi incorrer� in una caduta che lo ferir� gravemente: un incidente che lo render� menomato psichicamente per tutta la vita. Consonni non trover� pi� la voce per esprimere il suo sospetto pi� grave e cio� che a causargli quell’incidente sia stato proprio il “Dio di Roserio”, il Pessina. Mentre quella spinta diventer� una vera e propria ossessione per il campione, che a quel punto vincendo L’Olona, la corsa pi� importante della stagione, vorr� fugare, soprattutto a se stesso, ogni dubbio di tipo esistenziale.
