The Gladiators: a Tale of Rome and Judaea: Volume 2

The Gladiators: A Tale Of Rome And Judaea by George John Whyte-Melville. The narrative unfolds amid the political upheavals of Rome as Vitellius falls and Vespasian rises. At the center is Julius Placidus, a calculating Tribune who employs mercenary gladiators to advance his ambition. Esca, a noble Briton enslaved after a duel, shelters Mariamne, a Jewish captive, and becomes entangled with Valeria, a powerful Roman mistress who loves Esca. As plots unfold—from the palace to the Forum—intrigue, treachery, love, and brutal violence propel the story. Esca overhears a plan to seize Caesar’s throne and faces imprisonment and peril while protecting the empire from civil war. Calchas and Eleazar lead circles of loyalists and early Christians, offering counterpoints of faith and moral courage. The tale charts brutality and beauty, ambition and sacrifice, culminating in political upheaval and a hopeful escape for the central lovers in the wake of Rome’s turmoil.
