Glass

Glass by Edward Dillon is a technical and artistic exploration of glassmaking, examining the history, techniques, and applications of glass throughout the ages. Published in 1913, the book offers a detailed account of the glass industry, focusing on its development as both an art form and an industrial product. Dillon traces the origins of glassmaking, from its ancient beginnings in Mesopotamia and Egypt to its modern applications in architecture and decorative arts. The book provides insights into the various methods of glass production, such as blowing, molding, and casting, and emphasizes the skill and craftsmanship required to create both functional and ornamental glass items. The book also delves into the scientific aspects of glass, discussing its chemical properties, the materials used in its creation, and the innovations that allowed glassmakers to refine their craft. Dillon examines the impact of glass on daily life and industry, highlighting its widespread use in everything from windows and mirrors to tableware and art. His analysis also covers the influence of glass on design and architecture, particularly during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, where glass became a key material in both decorative and functional design.
