A Glimpse of the Heart of China (Classic Reprint)

A vivid travel memoir of a voyage up the Yangtze and a front-row look at missionary medicine in central China.

This edition follows a family as they reach Kiukiang to meet Dr. Mary Stone and observe her work among patients, schools, and communities.

The journal weaves together the perils and curiosities of travel with frank scenes of healthcare and faith in action. Rich observations of everyday life—crowded streets, busy ports, and bustling hospital compounds—paint a picture of a city at the edge of tradition and change. Through careful storytelling, you glimpse the people, the language gaps, and the quiet courage that helps illuminate a wider world.

• Scenes from a crowded river city and the challenges of moving luggage, navigating crowds, and communicating across cultures.
• Portraits of Dr. Stone’s life, her medical work, and the impact of her hospital and schools on local families.
• Snapshots of patient care, home visits, and the compassion that guides medical aid in difficult conditions.
• Vivid details of daily life in a Chinese port town, including markets, stairs, and the rhythms of river travel.

Ideal for readers who enjoy historical travelogues, medical mission narratives, and stories that illuminate cross-cultural encounters with warmth and candor.
