Global Perspectives on Gender and Work: Readings and Interpretations

This comprehensive reader examines the myriad ways in which work—whether it is well-paid, unpaid, or underpaid—profoundly influences our roles in both the public and private spheres. Jacqueline Goodman has selected a key set of essays that examine influential arguments on the multifaceted ways in which gender inequality is linked to market and non-market work. The readings also explore paths to greater gender equality, as well as the ways in which men, women, and children both have adapted to and resisted their subordinate position in the global economy. With its rich interdisciplinary perspective, this text will be ideal for courses in sociology, political science, and women's and gender studies.

Jacqueline Goodman is professor of sociology and director of women's and gender studies at the State University of New York, Potsdam College.
