One chapter describes the devastation that could accompany changes to the Gulf Stream and the Amazon rain forest and/or the release of gas hydrates that "lurk- [b]elow the world's oceans and permafrost." The author states unequivocally that global warming is due, in large part, to human activity. He also maintains that a strong worldwide commitment to reducing greenhouse gases, combined with immediate adaptation mechanisms such as the development of alternative energy sources, will reduce or prevent its worst potential consequences. A short list of recommended readings relies heavily on scientific reports. More than 50 color photos and charts explicate the text.
