During this time, changing global conditions-or the perception of such changes-have led to different environments to which regional organizations and their specific globalization projects have responded. In order to establish a comprehensive periodization, six structuring conditions can be identified: (1) the need for many countries in the Global South to jointly cope with postcolonialism (2) and the establishment of Western liberalism. In addition, (3) some regional organizations are the direct result of proactive Southern globalization projects, (4) while others reflect the need to survive between the confrontational blocs of the Cold War. (5) After the end of the Cold War, regionalisms-particularly in the Global South-were revived or even restarted (the so-called wave of 'new regionalisms'). Finally, over the past 20 years or so, regional organizations have increasingly been founded either to (passively) adapt to the emerging new world order, responding to 'new global challenges,' or to (actively) shape it.

Das Handbuch behandelt den Zeitraum von 1945, als die Vereinten Nationen gegrundet wurden, bis heute, mit besonderem Schwerpunkt auf der Zeit nach dem Kalten Krieg. Wahrend dieser Zeit haben sich verandernde globale Bedingungen oder die Wahrnehmung von Veranderungen zu unterschiedlichen Umgebungen gefuhrt, auf die regionale Organisationen und ihre spezifischen Globalisierungsprojekte reagiert haben. Um eine breite Periodisierung zu ermoglichen, lassen sich sechs Strukturierungsbedingungen identifizieren: (1) Die Notwendigkeit fur viele Lander des globalen Sudens, den Postkolonialismus gemeinsam zu bewaltigen, (2 ) und die Begrundung des westlichen Liberalismus. Daruber hinaus (3) sind einige regionale Organisationen das direkte Ergebnis proaktiver sudlicher Globalisierungsprojekte, (4) wahrend andere Ausdruck der Notwendigkeit sind, zwischen den konfrontativen Blocken des Kalten Krieges zu uberleben. Und (5) nach dem Ende des Kalten Krieges wurden die Regionalismen insbesondere im globalen Suden wiederbelebt oder sogar neu gestartet (die sogenannte Welle der "neuen Regionalismen"). Schliesslich wurden in den letzten rund 20 Jahren vermehrt regionale Organisationen gegrundet, um sich (eher passiv) in die entstehende neue Weltordnung einzuleben, auf "neue globale Herausforderungen" zu reagieren oder (aktiv) zu gestalten.
