Reviews
This entertaining overview reconstructs the most recent American epoch, the twentieth century, with each distinctive decade of the 1900s meriting attention. Taken together, a heady image of the century emerges. Although the historic world wars are chronicled in some depth, shorter vignettes give definition to such highlights as the growth of industry, the Jazz Age, and the Great Depression. The text makes a point of singling out important individuals, prominent social trends, and all manner of cultural signposts. A repeating feature, the "century spanner," focuses on early examples and recent innovations of Americana--recreational games, cars, even works by American artists. Illustrations are plentiful and include sepia images, lending an extra sense of history to text. Alice Joyce
