The ideal companion to a child's first tackle set, and a useful reference for years to follow.
Ages 8 and up
Gr 4-8-- Although flawed occasionally by awkward sentence structure and too-informal prose, this chatty guide to fishing should have wide appeal. Even experienced anglers will find much to learn from Schmidt's text, which explores all aspects of freshwater fishing. The types of fish and fishing, how to locate them, equipment, cleaning and cooking, and ethics are among the topics discussed. Line drawings are informative, and in addition to ethnic representation, physically handicapped children are shown fishing. Safety is strongly emphasized in both text and illustrations. While not as well written as Jim Arnosky's Freshwater Fish and Fishing (Four Winds, 1982), Let's Go Fishing is sure to be a popular sporting guide. --Susan H.
