About the Author

After graduating from medical school in Haiti, Dr. Mortel received training in obstetrics and gynecology at Hahnemann Medical College and in gynecologic oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He then joined the Penn State College of Medicine, became full professor and eventually chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Before his retirement, he served as associate dean and founding director of the Penn State University Cancer Center. Aside from his medical career, Dr. Mortel is an ordained deacon in the Roman Catholic Church and has established two charitable organizations to serve the poorest of the poor of his native country of Haiti: the Mortel Family Charitable Foundation and the Mortel High Hopes for Haiti Foundation
