Synopsis
There are probably more hiking guides than there are mountains to climb and hikes to take. Finding a guide that addresses the Senior Hiker, however, is a daunting task. “Go Take A Hike!” fills this need and is tailored to the unique physical and mental challenges that the Senior Hiker faces in keeping active and healthy. “Go Take A Hike!” provides useful information for Seniors on how to prepare for hiking so it is both an enjoyable and a safe activity within their abilities. It is filled with tips on the “what, how, and when” of hiking and suggests 75 outings in Western Maine and the White Mountains of different lengths and difficulty where Seniors can put their know-how into practice on the trail, with custom designed maps, clear directions to trailheads and information for each hike. Whether you are a Senior who has never done more than walk around the neighborhood and may have concerns about decreased strength and agility, or a Senior who has been an active mountain hiker in the past and would like to get back out on the trail, “Go Take A Hike!” is for you!
About the Author
Allen Crabtree has been hiking the hills and mountains of NH and Maine all his life. Now that he is a Senior Hiker he has learned that enjoying the joys of hiking is not restricted to the young, and has captured a life-time of experience in "Go Take A Hike!" to encourage his fellow Senior Hikers to hit the trail. Crabtree is a photo journalist who writes a regular hiking column for the Bridgton News (Maine), is the author of four books, and contributes to magazines and periodicals. He is also co-leader of the Denmark Mountain Hikers, a group of mainly seniors who climb a mountain every week. He and his wife Penny live in Sebago, ME, where they own and operate Crabtree's Collection Old Books and Crabtree's PYO Highbush Blueberries. Crabtree has a BS in Forestry from the University of NH, and an MS in Resource Management from Michigan State University. Before his retirement, he had a lengthy career in senior natural resource leadership positions around the country including as the Executive Director of the NH Fish and Game Department. He was one of the original members of the New Hampshire Outdoor Council. Allen was also a Scoutmaster for 30 years with Boy Scout Troops in several states and Europe and has been a family hike leader for the Sierra Club in Virginia.
