God and Intelligence in Modern Philosophy

2022 Reprint of the 1958 First Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition and not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. First published in 1925. Sheen describes for the reader the perfect remedy for what ails the modern age: According to Sheen, modern idealism needs the complement of realism; empiricism needs transcendental principles; philosophical biologism needs metaphysics; sociological morality needs ethics, and the world needs God! God and Intelligence in Modern Philosophy is a testament to the sheer brilliance of Sheen's intellect and to the immense clarity of his literary vision, but above all to the ardent fervor of his love for God.

"In this book, as in the modern world generally, the Catholic Church comes forward as the one and only real champion of Reason. She defends the wisdom of the world as the way of dealing with the world; she defends common sense and consistent thinking and the perception that two and two make four. And today she is alone in defending them... The question to which Dr. Sheen here applies the rational as opposed to the irrational method is the most tremendous question in the world; perhaps the only question in the world." G. K. CHESTERTON

"No book published in recent years does more credit to Catholic philosophy than this. It is masterly from the first page to the last, masterly in exposition and masterly in criticism. Then again (rarest of virtues in philosophical tomes) it is written in a fresh crisp style that makes the study of it not a labor but a delight. Any Catholic who knows this book and can use its treasures will be able to hold his own in the cleverest of modern company. We all owe a deep debt of gratitude to Dr. Sheen for the splendid service he has done us." The Month
